Cherimoya is a large tropical fruit with green knobby skin, but on the inside, it is sweet, creamy, and delicious. It’s often heart shaped, which is fitting because it is loved by many, and for good reason. Cherimoya, also known as ‘Custard Apple’ or ‘Ice Cream Fruit’, are very versatile in cooking. They can be enjoyed raw, blended into smoothies or shakes, used in an array of desserts from ice cream to mousse to pies, added to salads for a touch of sweetness, mashed into a creamy dip, or even complimented into a savory dish like jalapeno salsa.
Not only are these fruits a sweet delicacy, but they are rich in Potassium, Magnesium, and Vitamin C, which are important for heart health, nerve and muscle function, and maintaining healthy blood pressure. Cherimoya also contains fiber, which can offer digestive aid and blood sugar control. In addition, it is a good source of B vitamins, which have been shown to assist in the production of serotonin and dopamine, contributing to mood regulation. Eating a fruit that tastes like ice cream and offers all of these vitamins and minerals seems like a dream come true!
