Catnip is most commonly known for its stimulant effects on cats, but did you know it actually has the opposite effect on people? Yes! Catnip acts as a mild sedative and is commonly used as a sleep inducer. Its calming properties come from its nepetalactone acid compounds, which can fight insomnia and other sleep disorders! Not only can it help you to fall asleep faster, but it can improve the overall quality of sleep and sleep longevity. It is a long standing (and very safe) remedy for restless sleep and irritability in toddlers and babies. (Always consult a healthcare professional before giving tinctures to your child. Tea is an effective alternative for children). Active compounds known as iridoid glycosides are thought to contribute to this herb’s ability to relieve and treat anxiety symptoms, as well as other nervous system disorders. It works well against tension headaches and can induce a sense of relaxation, which can offer additional relief from anxiety and stress. It has proven its worth at not only relaxing the mind, but providing overall relaxation to the body. Catnip is imbued with anesthetic, antiseptic, antibiotic, antimicrobial, astringent, and antibacterial properties. Amazing right? It is particularly effective in aiding digestive issues, especially constipation, cramping, and bloating. It is a carminative, which helps to push down air stuck in the intestines until it is expelled from the body, and can ease knots and inflammation in the gastrointestinal system, further relieving tightness and discomfort. This plant is classified as a diaphoretic herb, meaning it can induce perspiration without raising body temperature, which can help to break a fever. It contains potent antioxidants that can boost immune strength and keep chronic ailments at bay, and could also speed up the healing process of an existing ailment. Its antiseptic attributes are effective in treating skin infections, and it contains high levels of tannins which help to accelerate the process of repairing damaged tissues, and stop hemorrhages from cuts and grazes. Those tannins are also useful in curing burn injuries, scalds, insect bites, and other skin problems caused by inflammation. I don’t know about you, but just knowing a plant like this exists puts my mind at ease! 

• Suggested dosage for our Catnip tincture is 1-3 droppers full, up to 3x daily, but best taken before sleep as it can cause drowsiness.
